Gucci Mane’s success is the reason why Atlanta rap is the way it is today. The beats in trap music are characterized by hi-hats and synths. These kinds of homes are commonly found around Atlanta. This marks the beginning of “trap”, a word meaning a house where drugs are produced and sold. The Atlanta native raps about his numerous legal charges and his lifestyle, seemingly revolving around heavy drug use. Radric Davis, better known as Gucci Mane, explodes onto the scene. Soulja Boy, best known for his 2007 smash hit “Crank Dat” was the last major rap act out of Atlanta for a while.įast forward to 2009. This mid 2000’s sound inspired a lot of artists across the country, reviving gangsta rap. Following them were acts like Lil Jon, Ludacris and TI, who’s sound focused on gangsta rap.

The late 1990’s saw the emergence of more pop oriented acts like Usher and Ciara, both of which are still very popular to this day. Acts like Outkast and Kriss Kross are some of the first rappers from the city, incorporating a “dirty south” sound while making allusions to the East and West Coast rap styles found in New York and Los Angeles, respectively. Since the 1990’s, the city of Atlanta has been considered one of the major cities for hip-hop, along with New York and Los Angeles.
